Raku Badger Jar

$285.00

This raku badger jar consists of a wheel thrown body and head, upon which the animal features are sculpted. Can be used to stash cash, as an urn, or just a decorative piece.

The raku process involves removing the previously bisqued piece from the kiln while it is red hot (roughly 1830 degrees Fahrenheit). The piece is then placed it into a vessel filled with combustible materials (I like fine wood chips and newspaper) and closed in. By closing the vessel, the fire seeks to draw oxygen from within the clay. The smoke and carbon trapped in the vessel is pulled into the clay causing blackening, which I have used to define the badger's characteristic stripes and belly..

My animal jars are inspired by my love of animals and ancient Egyptian canopic jars.

THIS PIECE IS NOT FOOD SAFE AND WILL NOT HOLD WATER.
